How to control electric blinds/gates/shutters in APPLE HOMEKIT/GOOGLE/ALEXA using a smart mini relay (L82) & (O/S/C) Open, Stop & Close

This article explains how to configure the Smart Mini Relay (L82) for compatibility with voice assistant platforms, including Apple HomeKit, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa.

❗ Why Voice Assistants May Not Discover the Relay

If you add the Smart Mini Relay to the Lightwave app using the Open/Stop/Close (O/S/C) mode, it will not be discovered by Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Alexa, or other third-party voice control platforms.

✅ The Solution: Use ON/OFF Mode Instead

To ensure compatibility, you must add the Smart Mini Relay to the Lightwave app as ON/OFF, not O/S/C. Once added in ON/OFF mode:

  • The relay becomes discoverable and controllable by AHK, Google, and Alexa.

  • You can still utilise the O/S/C commands internally through automations.

🔄 Create Two IF-DO Automations in the Lightwave App

Even though you’ve added the relay as ON/OFF, you can map ON to OPEN and OFF to CLOSE using Lightwave’s IF-DO automation.

🔧 Automation 1 – ON = OPEN

  1. Open the Lightwave app and go to Automations.

  2. Tap Add Automation and select IF-DO.

  3. Under IF (Trigger):

    • Select the relay

    • Choose Switch

    • Set to ON

  4. Under DO (Action):

    • Select the same relay

    • Choose O/S/C

    • Set to OPEN

  5. Name and save the automation.

🎉 Now, turning the relay ON from any app or voice command will trigger the OPEN action.

🔧 Automation 2 – OFF = CLOSE

  1. Go to Automations and tap Add Automation.

  2. Under IF (Trigger):

    • Select the relay

    • Choose Switch

    • Set to OFF

  3. Under DO (Action):

    • Select the relay

    • Choose O/S/C

    • Set to CLOSE

  4. Name and save the automation.

🎉 Turning the relay OFF will now trigger the CLOSE action.

🗣️ Improve Voice Control Experience

By default, voice platforms will use “turn on/off” commands for your relay (e.g., “Turn on blinds”), which may feel unnatural. You can customise this using scenes and routines:

In Alexa:

  • Create a routine with your preferred voice phrase.

  • Example: Saying “Alexa, open blinds” triggers the relay ON.

In Apple HomeKit:

  • Add a custom scene:

    • Name: Open Blinds

    • Accessory: Select your relay

    • Set state to ON

  • Now you can say “Hey Siri, open blinds”.

Repeat the process for CLOSE using relay OFF.

⏱️ Optional: Add a STOP Command (Motor Safety)

For certain electric motor setups, it may be necessary to stop movement after OPEN or CLOSE. This requires a second action:

Example:

Trigger: Relay ON
Action 1: O/S/C → OPEN
Action 2: O/S/C → STOP (with a 5-second delay)

This ensures the motor doesn’t continue running unnecessarily.
