How to install the Open/Stop/Close Smart Mini Relay (LP82)

This article guides you through the preparation, installation, and setup of the Lightwave Smart Mini Relay (LP82) , including tips for wiring, use cases, and pulse mode configuration.

⚠️ Important Wiring Warning

The relay and dimmer in this setup communicate wirelessly through the Lightwave system and should not be physically wired together.

Do not hardwire the relay back to the dimmer.

Do not place the permanent Live cable directly into the Common (COM) terminal.

✅ A jumper cable must be installed from the L terminal to the COM terminal where required.

Incorrect wiring can:

  • Damage the dimmer

  • Cause incorrect operationLP82

  • Void the warranty

  • Potentially damage the lighting circuit

✅ The relay and dimmer should only be linked using a Group Automation in the Lightwave app.

⚙️ Overview

The Smart Mini Relay (LP82) is a highly adaptable device designed for remotely controlling electrical circuits, including:

  • Extractor fans

  • Blinds

  • Curtains

  • Gates

  • Garage doors

  • Non-dimmable lighting

The LP82 offers multiple operating modes, making it suitable for both motor control and standard switching applications.

When pairing the LP82 to the Lightwave app, you will be asked to choose between:

  • Open / Stop / Close Mode

  • On / Off Mode

Open / Stop / Close Mode

This mode is designed for motorised applications such as:

  • Garage doors

  • Electric gates

  • Blinds

  • Shutters

  • Curtains

  • Other motor-controlled systems

This mode allows the relay to provide directional motor control and works especially well with Pulse Mode functionality.

On / Off Mode

This mode is intended for:

  • Lighting circuits

  • Non-dimmable loads

  • Standard switching applications

💡 This is the recommended mode when using the relay alongside a Lightwave dimmer in a wireless Group automation.

To enable the Smart Mini Relay to operate in conjunction with a dimmer, you will need to create a GROUP automation within the Lightwave app. This allows both devices to communicate wirelessly without any direct wiring connection between them.

🧰 Key Features

  • Supports mains-powered and volts-free (low voltage) switching

  • Capable of switching loads up to 500W

  • Can supply power directly to the circuit (refer to wiring instructions)

  • Must be installed in a Class II-compliant enclosure for safety

  • Includes Pulse Mode for blinds, shutters, garage doors, and gates

💡 Commonly used for circuits exceeding the wattage limit of a dimmer or for non-dimmable circuits.

🛠️ Installation Guide

1. Preparation

1.1 Choose a Suitable Location

Select a safe installation location that prevents accidental contact with live electrical parts.

1.2 Isolate the Power

Turn off mains power at the consumer unit before beginning installation.

1.3 Power Requirements

The relay requires mains power to function — even when being used for volts-free applications.

2. Wiring the Relay

Connect:

  • Live

  • Neutral

power cables to the relay.

📌 Existing wiring colours may vary and may not always be labelled correctly. If unsure, consult a qualified electrician.

🔗 Creating a Wireless Group Automation

To make the relay and dimmer communicate wirelessly:

  1. Open the Lightwave App

  2. Tap the green + button at the bottom centre

  3. Select Automations

  4. Tap Group

  5. Select Switch

  6. Choose:

    • The Relay

    • The Dimmer

  7. Tap Next

  8. Enter a name for the automation

  9. Tap Done in the top-right corner

Once completed, both devices will mirror each other wirelessly through the Link Plus Hub.

🔁 Pulse Mode for Controlled Devices

Some appliances — such as blinds, garage doors, and gates — require a pulse signal rather than a permanent switched output.

Pulse Mode simulates a momentary button press.

How Pulse Mode Works

  • Pulse duration can be adjusted in the app (0.5–6 seconds)

  • After sending the pulse, the relay disengages automatically

  • The app displays the last selected state, even though the relay contacts return to neutral

🔍 Always consult the controller manufacturer’s instructions to confirm compatibility with pulse inputs.
