How to wire Philips Hue Lights/Smart bulbs directly to our dimmer switches (ON & OFF MODE)

Please note that in order for a wired lightwave dimmer to work with Philips Hue, it is necessary to set it to on/off mode. To do this, it is important to ensure that a neutral wire is present at the switch point. By default, lightwave dimmers are in dimmable mode, so it is essential to change them to on/off mode, this will be explained below

To facilitate the use of Phillips hue bulbs (also known as smart bulbs), the dimmer needs to meet the following conditions:

• The dimmer must have a neutral terminal connection (older models do not have this)
• The mains neutral wire must be connected to the dimmer to use the smart bulb (be mindful to confirm this, as not all UK properties have neutral wires at switch locations)
• The dimmer must be on the latest firmware 

Each channel of a Lightwave dimmer can handle up to a maximum load of 100-watts of Philips hue lighting or non-dimmable lamps in On/Off mode. In their original state, our Lightwave dimmers are engineered solely to control standard dimmable lamps if no neutral wire is present. Thus, prior to connecting Philips Hue lamps or non-dimmable lamps, the following precautionary steps need to be undertaken: 

How to set a dimmer to On/Off Mode

STEP 1 - Connect only the Live and neutral to the dimmer to give it power (not lighting circuits)

STEP 2 - ADD the dimmer to the app

STEP 3 - Update dimmer to the latest firmware if one is available 

STEP 4 - You must set the relevant dimmer channels to discrete on and off in the dimmer 'settings' tab under the 'Calibration' section and 'Save Values' 

It is important to do this before connecting a smart bulb or non-dimmable light as it changes the dimmer channel to on and off mode and will not try to calibrate it when connected. Calibrating is only for standard dimmable lamps to help find high and low dimming ranges. See screen shot below on how to set the channel of a dimmer to non dimmable mode:

Long presses on the top and bottom buttons of the dimmer will no longer dim the bulbs. You can adjust the brightness and colour of the bulbs via the app only when selecting the Hue lamp as shown below.

If you wish to change the colours of the bulbs from the physical buttons you can use the Multi-press automation settings where you can set from 2-24 taps and each tap can be set up to change to different colours.

Please note: When a neutral wire isn't at the switch point, an alternative solution would be to route the hue lighting circuit directly to one of our smart mini relay's, bypassing the dimmer. Following this adjustment, you can utilise an unused channel in our dimmer to wirelessly control the hue lighting circuit. As no neutral wire is present, it is imperative that a standard dimmable lighting circuit is connected to channel 1 of our dimmer, which is the primary channel. Subsequently channels 2, 3, or 4, with no active lighting connections, can be used the manual control point. To do this you can use this spare channel to mirror the hue lighting circuit in the dimmer settings.
