# Updating Firmware on Your Lightwave Devices
## This article explains what a firmware update is, how it affects your Lightwave devices, and provides a step-by-step guide on how to update your devices through the Lightwave app.
### 🧠 What is Firmware?
**Firmware** is a type of software embedded into hardware devices. It controls how the hardware behaves and interacts with other systems. In the Lightwave ecosystem, firmware governs the functionality of devices such as dimmers, relays, and thermostats.

### 🔄 Why Firmware Updates Matter
Lightwave devices are capable of receiving **over-the-air (OTA) firmware updates** through the **Link Plus hub**. These updates can:
- Improve device performance
- Add new features (e.g., energy monitoring, push notifications, improved wireless response time)
- Enhance automation capabilities
- Fix known bugs
Firmware updates are indicated directly on each device tile in the Lightwave app when available.

### 📲 How to Perform a Firmware Update
Follow these steps to update the firmware on your Lightwave device:
#### 1️⃣ **Open the Lightwave App**
- Find the device you wish to update.
#### 2️⃣ **Enter Device Settings**
- Long-press on the device tile to open the **Device Page**.
- Navigate to **Settings \> Firmware Update**.

#### 3️⃣ **Check for Available Updates**
- If you see the message **“Your device is up to date,”** no update is currently available.
- If an update is available, tap **“Update Device.”**
#### 4️⃣ **Queue Multiple Updates**
- If you have several devices with updates, you can tap **“Update”** on each one. They will queue and update one after the other.
#### 5️⃣ **Update in Progress**
- The Link Plus and the selected device will **flash light blue rapidly** during the update.
- ⚠️ *Important: Do not interact with the app or the devices during this process.*
#### 6️⃣ **Completion Notification**
- The app will notify you once the update is complete.

### 💡 Special Note for Dimmers
When updating a **dimmer**, the device will perform an **auto calibration**:
- The dimmer will flash **Green/White** and turn connected lights **ON and OFF**.
- This calibration ensures optimal dimming performance.
- Once complete, the LED indicator will return to its normal state.

### 🚨 Important Notice
- Device and Link Plus LEDs will flash rapidly during firmware updates – this is normal.
- The update process may take several minutes per device (Around 4 minutes)
- The app will temporarily be unresponsive due to the Link Plus updating the device
