How to set up a "2-WAY SWITCHING" Automation

This article explains how to configure Two-Way Switching Automations using Lightwave Smart Series dimmers. It guides you through linking multiple dimmers together so they can control the same lighting circuit, just like traditional 2-way or intermediate switches.

🔧 What Is Two-Way Switching?

A Two-Way Switching Automation allows more than one Lightwave dimmer to control a single lighting circuit. This is useful in hallways, staircases, or large rooms with multiple switch points.

🧠 How It Works

  • One dimmer is set as the MASTER (controls the load/light).

  • All other dimmers become SECONDARY (SLAVE) and send control signals to the MASTER.

  • You can even assign a MAGIC BUTTON (a spare wireless gang on a wired dimmer) to act as a controller.

📌 Only the MASTER needs calibration for bulb compatibility—the SECONDARY dimmers follow its behavior.

🪜 Step-by-Step: Set Up Two-Way Switching with 3 Smart Series Dimmers

1️⃣ Open the Lightwave app and tap the “+”

Go to the Automations tab.

2️⃣ Choose Two-Way Switching

3️⃣ Select the relevant dimmers

Pick all the dimmers you want to include in this automation.

4️⃣ Set the MASTER dimmer

Choose the dimmer that is physically connected to the lighting circuit. The app will automatically set the others as SECONDARY (SLAVE) dimmers.

5️⃣ Name your automation and hit Done

⚠️ Important Notes

  • 🧪 The MASTER dimmer will automatically run a calibration process.

  • 💡 After calibration, turn on the MASTER from the app and adjust brightness if needed.

  • 🔁 All linked dimmers will now work in sync—pressing any one physically will switch and dim the lights.

  • 🚫 SECONDARY dimmers become app-disabled (indicated by an S symbol on their tile). We recommend moving the SECONDARY  Devices into a separate room to hide them away from view to save confusion

  • ✅ A quick green flash when switching from a SECONDARY dimmer is normal—it confirms control signal was sent.
