Getting your Lightwave heating ready for Winter

Simple checks to make sure your heating system is ready for the colder months.

As the colder weather approaches, it’s a good idea to check your Lightwave heating system before you need to rely on it every day.

If your heating has been used less frequently over the summer, a few settings or devices may need attention. Running through the checklist below can help you get everything ready and may resolve common issues before you need to contact our Support Team.

1. Check your heating schedules

First, check that your heating schedules are still set up correctly.

If you deleted your schedules over the summer, you’ll need to create new ones before your heating can operate automatically.

How to create a Heating Schedule

Top Tip: Consider creating separate heating schedules for different rooms or groups of rooms, particularly if they are used at different times of the day. For example, you could have one schedule for your bedrooms, another for the hallway, and a separate schedule for the kitchen. This gives you greater flexibility and allows you to heat each area when you actually need it, rather than having every TRV turn on and off at the same time.

2. Check your Call for Heat automation

Your Call for Heat automation is an important part of your Lightwave heating setup.

It allows your thermostat and TRVs to communicate with your boiler and request heat when required. If the Call for Heat automation has been deleted, your individual heating schedules may still appear to be working, but your heating may not operate correctly.

Check that your Call for Heat schedule is still present and configured correctly.

3. Check that your schedules are activated

Your heating schedules and Call for Heat automation may not have been deleted — they may simply have been deactivated during the summer.

Check that all the schedules and automations you want to use are currently activated.

If a schedule or automation is deactivated, it won't run even though it remains visible in the app.

To activate an automation:

1. go to your Automations section in the bottom of right section of the screen of the Lightwave app
2. press and hold on the automation tile for the automation you would like to toggle (if you are in list view tap on the automation)
3. You will see an active toggle when scrolling down, you can toggle ON for Active and OFF for De-active

4. Check your target temperatures

Your schedules may be set up and activated correctly, but the target temperatures could be preventing your heating from coming on when you expect it to.

For example, if a schedule is set to a target temperature of 15°C, your heating may not come on unless the room temperature falls below this level.

As a general guide, a target temperature of around 22°C can be used when you want the heating to come on, although the ideal temperature will depend on your personal preference and circumstances.

When you don't want the heating to call for heat, we generally recommend setting the target temperature to 0°C. Alternatively, you can use a lower temperature such as 5–10°C if you want the heating to come on if the property becomes particularly cold.

5. Check the batteries in your thermostat and TRVs

Low batteries are one of the most common things to check when heating is used again after the summer.

Check the battery levels of your thermostat and all your TRVs. If any batteries are low, replace them.

It's also worth replacing batteries that are showing around 50% rather than waiting for them to become completely depleted. This is particularly important if you have several TRVs around your home.

If one or more TRVs have low batteries, they may have difficulty communicating correctly, which can potentially affect your heating system and its Call for Heat operation even if other TRV's are at 100% one rouge TRV/thermostat can throw the communication for the heating system off.

6. Check that your thermostat and TRVs are connected

After a period of limited use, check that all your heating devices are still connected and appearing correctly in the Lightwave app.

Make sure your:

  • Thermostat is showing correctly in the app.
  • TRVs are still present and connected.
  • Heating devices haven't been accidentally removed from your system.

If a device is missing or showing as disconnected, you may need to pair it with your system again.

7. Try resaving your schedules

If everything appears to be set up correctly but your heating still isn't responding as expected, try opening your heating schedule and saving it again.

To re-save a schedule:

1. go to your Automations section in the bottom of right section of the screen of the Lightwave app
2. press and hold on the automation tile for the automation you would like to toggle (if you are in list view tap on the automation)
3.  press edit in the top right
4. keep pressing next in the top right
5. press save in the top right

You can also try resaving your Call for Heat automation.

In some cases, simply resaving the schedule or automation can resolve an issue where the heating isn't responding as expected.

Quick winter-preparation checklist

Before contacting Support, check:

  • Heating schedules – Are they present and set up correctly?
  • Call for Heat – Is the automation still present?
  • Activation – Are your schedules and automations activated?
  • Target temperatures – Are they set to temperatures that will allow the heating to come on?
  • Batteries – Do your thermostat and TRVs have sufficient battery levels?
  • Device connection – Are all your heating devices still connected and visible in the app?
  • Resave – Have you tried resaving your heating schedules and Call for Heat automation?

Completing these checks can help ensure your Lightwave heating system is ready for the colder months and operating as expected.
